Golden Beach in south Taiwan is widely known and has been attracting many beachgoers. In recent years, this beach has been eroded and measures to restore the sandy beach are required. The cause of the beach erosion was investigated on the basis of bathymetric survey data. In the study area, northward longshore sand transport, which was induced by the wave-sheltering effect of Anping Harbor, prevails, and the rate of transport was estimated to be 1.25×10 5 m 3 /yr with the conditions of the depth of closure (h c ) of -6 m, the berm height (h R ) of 2.2 m, and the characteristic height of beach changes (h) of 9.2 m.
Along the coastline north of Tainan in Taiwan southward longshore sand transport prevails because of oblique wave incidence from the north, and a barrier island system has developed along the coastline. In this area, the angle of incident waves to the direction normal to the shoreline is large; thus, the formation of a barrier island and a sand spit can be observed. These beach changes due to prevailing southward longshore sand transport were investigated using satellite images and topographic survey data, and the rate of southward longshore sand transport in the long-term between 1983 and 2017 was estimated to be 6.7×10 5 m 3 /yr from the comparison of shoreline changes.
Golden Beach in Taiwan is a sandy beach attracting many beachgoers because of its wide sandy beach and beautiful sunset. In recent years, this beach has been eroded. The cause of the beach erosion is considered to be due to the wave-sheltering effect of the Anping Harbor breakwaters constructed 4 km north of the beach. Now the restoration of sandy beach is underway by the construction of groins as well as beach nourishment using sand procured from the downcoast deposition area. This study aims to investigate the cause of the beach erosion of this beach to work out the effective measures against beach erosion.
