We study the explosive three wave interaction between beam modes and ion acoustic waves. Coupling coefficients and growth times for the nonlinear interactions are calculated and discussed. We consider both the case of a coherent triplet and that of many interacting waves. The effects of the commonly used assumptions of quasineutrality and a massless electron fluid on the nonlinear wave dynamics are investigated. We also consider the effects of finite geometry.
