X-ray lineshifts of rare earth elements in the hexaborides of La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Yb, and Y relative to the corresponding tri-or difluorides are measured by the crystal diffraction method. The experimental shifts are compared with the values obtained in relativistic self-consistent field calculations in the effective free ion approximation. The hexaborides of La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Gd are shown to have 4fn-15d configuration (4d for H), and those of Eu and Yb, 4 P configuration.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
