We investigate the effects of external noise on pattern formation in a threedimensional, pulse coupled excitable medium. It is found that for weak to moderate coupling between the cells, simple scroll waves evolve into complex patterns. The increase of the lengths of vortex lines quantifies the increasing complexity of the patterns. Noise nucleates patterns in the bulk of the medium via the formation of small vortex rings that subsequently expand for weak to moderate coupling.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
