Decline of silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) in Poland. On the b.isis of his own observations and of data from the literature, the author gives a review of silver fir diseases, pests and damage by other biotic and abiotic factors in Poland and on conjectural causes of the decline of this tree species.
Air pollution and forest pests
A view is given on the knowledge on relations between air pollution and arthropods as forest pests. By air pollution the population dynamics of some pests are changed to disadvantage of wood. This is possible as well by directly influencing the pest as by indirectly favouring in consequence of lightning the forest stand. Some of the pest species can be used as bioindicators for air pollution, namely Zeiraphera griseana, Cephalcia falleni and Pristiphora abietina at spruce, Dreyfusia nordmannianae at fir, Taeniothrips laricivorus at larch and Exoteleia dodecella at pine.
