The objective of this study was to examine the extent to which rural women at age 40 and over participate to cervical and breast cancer surveillance and changes in this participation by such variables as sociodemographic and familial characteristics and information about surveillance programmes. Material and Methodology: The survey sample consisted of 285 women at age 40 and over without any diagnosis of breast and cervical cancer. A questionnaire form was used in collecting relevant data and chi-square test was used in their analysis. Ethics committee approval was taken. Findings: The proportion of women receiving training in breast and cervical cancer is 44.9%, and 82% of these women received their training from nurses. 57.5% of women have had at least one BSE (Breast Self-Exam) while only 22% do it regularly. It was found that 74.7% of women have never had mammography and 67.7% have never taken Pap smear test. There is a meaningful relationship between the place of living and socioeconomic status as sociodemographic characteristics on the one side and participation to breast cancer surveillance (mammography) on the other (p<0.05). There is also significant relationship between the status of information on the part of women concerning breast and cervical cancer surveillance services and their participation to (p<0.05). Conclusion: Findings of the study suggest that the level of information of women about breast and cervical cancer surveillance affects their participation and it is presently insufficient.
