No randomized controlled trial has investigated the efficacy of hypnosis for reducing pain and improving wound-healing in children with burns. This randomized controlled trial aimed to investigate whether hypnosis decreases pain, anxiety, and stress and accelerates wound-healing in children undergoing burn wound procedures. Children (4-16 years) with acute burns presenting for their first dressing change were randomly assigned to a Hypnosis Group who received hypnosis plus standard care or a Standard Care Group who received standard pharmacological and nonpharmacological intervention. Repeated measures of pain intensity, anxiety, stress, and wound-healing were taken at dressing changes until ≥95% wound re-epithelialization. Data for 62 children were analyzed on an intent-to-treat basis using Generalized Estimating Equations (n = 35 Standard Care Group; n = 27 Hypnosis Group). An effect on the primary outcomes of pain and wound healing was not supported {self-reported pain intensity largest Mean Difference [MD] = -0.85 (95% confidence interval [CI]: -1.91 to 0.22), P = 0.12; MD for re-epithelialization = -0.46 [95% CI: -4.27 to 3.35], P = 0.81}. Some support was found for an effect on the secondary outcomes of preprocedural anxiety (MD = -0.80 [95% CI: -1.50 to -0.10], P = 0.03 before the second dressing change) and heart rate as a measure of stress (MD = -15.20 [-27.20 to -3.20], P = 0.01 and MD = -15.39 [-28.25 to -2.53], P = 0.02 before and after the third dressing change). Hypnosis may be effective for decreasing preprocedural anxiety and heart rate in children undergoing repeated pediatric wound care procedures but not for reducing pain intensity or accelerating wound healing.
Background and aimsThe aim of this study is to estimate the longitudinal associations between online social networking addiction (OSNA) and depression, whether OSNA predicts development of depression, and reversely, whether depression predicts development of OSNA.MethodsA total of 5,365 students from nine secondary schools in Guangzhou, Southern China were surveyed at baseline in March 2014, and followed up 9 months later. Level of OSNA and depression were measured using the validated OSNA scale and CES-D, respectively. Multilevel logistic regression models were applied to estimate the longitudinal associations between OSNA and depression.ResultsAdolescents who were depressed but free of OSNA at baseline had 1.48 times more likely to develop OSNA at follow-up compared with those non-depressed at baseline [adjusted OR (AOR): 1.48, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.14–1.93]. In addition, compared with those who were not depressed during the follow-up period, adolescents who were persistently depressed or emerging depressed during the follow-up period had increased risk of developing OSNA at follow-up (AOR: 3.45, 95% CI: 2.51–4.75 for persistent depression; AOR: 4.47, 95% CI: 3.33–5.99 for emerging depression). Reversely, among those without depression at baseline, adolescents who were classified as persistent OSNA or emerging OSNA had higher risk of developing depression compared with those who were no OSNA (AOR: 1.65, 95% CI: 1.01–2.69 for persistent OSNA; AOR: 4.29; 95% CI: 3.17–5.81 for emerging OSNA).ConclusionThe findings indicate a bidirectional association between OSNA and depression, meaning that addictive online social networking use is accompanied by increased level of depressive symptoms.
Formation of a protein corona around nanoparticles when immersed into biological fluids is well-known; less studied is the formation of lipid coronas around nanoparticles. In many cases, the identity of a nanoparticle-acquired corona determines nanoparticle fate within a biological system and its interactions with cells and organisms. This work systematically explores the impact of nanoparticle surface chemistry and lipid character on the formation of lipid coronas for 3 different nanoparticle surface chemistries (2 cationic, 1 anionic) on 14 nm gold nanoparticles exposed to a series of lipid vesicles of 4 different compositions. Qualitative (plasmon band shifting, ζpotential analysis, dynamic light scattering on the part of the nanoparticles) and quantitative (lipid liquid chromatography/ mass spectrometry) methods are developed with a "pull-down" scheme to assess the degree of lipid corona formation in these systems. In general, cationic nanoparticles extract 60−95% of the lipids available in vesicles under the described experimental conditions, while anionic nanoparticles extract almost none. While electrostatics apparently dominate the lipid−nanoparticle interactions, primary amine polymer surfaces extract more lipids than quaternary ammonium surfaces. Free cationic species can act as lipid-binding competitors in solution.
