Mammal richness and diversity in Serra do Facão region, Southeastern Goiás state, central Brazil. http://dx.doi.org/10.1590/1676-0611- BN-2015-0033 Abstract: At least 251 mammal species are recorded for the Brazilan cerrado, which, therefore, is the third richest Brazilian biome. Most mammal surveys in Brazilian cerrado result from studies performed opportunistically and in short time periods. The aims of the present study were (1) provide a checklist for the mammalian fauna based on a five-year sampling in Serra do Facão region, Southeastern Goiás state; (2) compare small non-flying mammals diversity in open and forest areas and (3) compare species diversity before and after the flood caused by a hydroelectric reservoir filling. The data was gathered in 19 sampling periods, from May 2008 to September 2013. We sampled open and forest habitats and captured non-flying small mammals with Sherman and Tomahawk live traps and pitfalls; bats were sampled with mist-nets; large mammals were recorded with camera traps, and by direct observations and track surveys in field. We found 20 species of small non-flying mammals, 10 species of bats and 33 species of larger mammals. Species diversity was greater for forest than open habitats, and was also greater before than after the complete reservoir filling. About 10% of the recorded species are included in the Brazilian official list of threatened species. The total richness represents 25% of all cerrado mammal fauna, highlighting the importance of this area for regional mammal fauna conservation. We investigated food patterns in the diet composition of 452 specimens of Crotalus durissus from Central Brazil. Thirty-three items were recorded corresponding to four categories: rodents (75.76%), marsupials (6.06%), unidentified mammals (9.09%) and reptiles (9.09%). Adults of both sexes and some juveniles feed mostly on mammals, specifically rodents, it is the most active and abundant prey throughout the year mainly in areas from Cerrado. In addition, we observed that in C. durissus there is a trend in the diet of females could be more diverse, maybe this can be associated to sexual differences involving different strategies of the feeding biology of this rattlesnake. Resumen: Patrones de alimentación fueron investigados en la composición de la dieta de 452 ejemplares de Crotalus durissus de Brasil central. Treinta y tres ítems fueron registrados, correspondientes a cuatro categorías: roedores (75.76%), marsupiales (6.6%), mamíferos no identificados (9.09%) y reptiles (9.09%). Los adultos de ambos sexos e individuos jóvenes se alimentaron básicamente de mamíferos, en específico de roedores, esta es la presa más activa y abundante durante todo el año, principalmente en las áreas de Cerrado. Además fue observado que en C. durissus existe una tendencia a que la dieta de las hembras sea más diversa, factor que podría estar relacionado a las diferencias sexuales que implican diferentes estrategias de alimentación en la biología de esta serpiente cascabel. Spatial variation and the habitat influence in the structure of communities of small mammals in areas of rocky fields in the Federal District. Biota Neotrop. 10(1): http:// www.biotaneotropica.org.br/v10n1/en/abstract?article+bn00410012010. Abstract:In the present study, we investigated the communities of small mammals in rocky fields in the Federal District. We examined the composition, abundance and richness and their relation to the structure of the habitat and if there is significant spatial variation in species composition among sites of rocky fields. Small mammals were sampled by live-trapping techniques in seven sites. The total effort for the seven sites was 5.680 trap-nights; we captured 157 individuals in eight species of rodents. Calomys tener and Cerradomys scotti were the most abundant species in the study sites, with 47.1 and 18.0% of total individuals, respectively. The results showed that the areas of rocky fields of the Federal District have a fauna of small mammals (average of four, range of variation of three to five species), comparable to other Cerrado physiognomies. The complexity of the habitat proved to be a major determinant in the composition of communities of small mammals in rocky fields. There was a distinction between communities of small mammals of the sites of APA Gama e Cabeça do Veado and the sites of the APA de Cafuringa. There was influence of the distance between the places on the composition of species with decreasing similarity with increasing distance among sites. The differences in environmental conditions, the structure of the habitat and the fact that it was possible two biogeographical regions may explain the faunal differences between the two regions. Keywords: Cerrado, rodents, habitat structure, complexity. Resumo:No presente estudo foram investigadas as comunidades de pequenos mamíferos em campos rupestres do Distrito Federal (DF). Foram analisadas a composição, abundância e riqueza e suas relações com a estrutura do habitat e se existe variação espacial significativa na composição de espécies entre os sítios de campo rupestre. Os pequenos mamíferos foram estudados com o método de marcação e recaptura em sete sítios. O esforço total para os sete sítios foi de 5.680 armadilhas-noite, sendo capturados 157 indivíduos e oito espécies de roedores. Calomys tener e Cerradomys scotti foram as espécies mais abundantes do estudo, com 47,1 e 18,0% do total de indivíduos, respectivamente. Ambas estavam presentes em todos os sítios amostrados. Os resultados mostraram que as áreas de campo rupestre do DF apresentam uma fauna de pequenos mamíferos (média de quatro com amplitude de variação de três a cinco espécies), comparáveis a de outras fisionomias de Cerrado. A complexidade do habitat mostrou-se como um dos principais determinantes na composição das comunidades de pequenos mamíferos em campo rupestre.
