14.2: New Drive System for PDPs with Improved Image Quality: Plasma Al

Abstract: A novel driving system for PDPs called the “PLASMA AI” has been developed achieving more than a 50% increase in peak brightness of the image reproduced while maintaining the power consumption almost unchanged. The image quality is so improved that the PDP monitor is now applicable for the use in large‐screen home TV.

“…4(a) is adopted for operating the ac PDP to meet the requirement and realizes a TV image with 256 grayscales [8]. In the ADS method, as the display period can be configured without limitation by the other period, the various arrangements of display pulses in every subfield are proposed for improving image quality [9], [10]. “…The number of sub-fields for one field of picture was twelve:six SW sub-fields for bits 0-5, two SE sub-fields for bit 6, and four SE sub-fields for bit 7. The total number of sustain pulses was varied from 415 to 1861 depending on the average picture level (APL) [16], while keeping the number-of-sustain-pulse ratios of 1:2:4:8:16:32:32:. :32 for the sub-fields 1, 2,., 12.…”

“…The amplitude of the current is proportional to the average signal level (ASL) of the video data [2]. The discharge current can be modeled digitally using the DP and ASL data of the video processing circuit (2) id (n) = DP(n)LIASL(n)…”

“…As the PDP typically uses a periodic pulsed type driving scheme [1], [2] for displaying the video data, the load current of the dc-dc converter is continuously changing from no load to full load with a 16.7ms time constant. To meet the tight voltage regulation specifications at this load condition, the feedback compensator of the dc-dc converter should provide a wide bandwidth and a high dc gain.…”
