16.2: Influence of rough surface upon optical characteristics of reflective LCD with a polarizer

Abstract: We have developed bright 260,000-color "High Reflective TFT (HR-TFT) " liquid crystal display (LCD) with diffused "Micro Reflective Structure (MRS)" inside a panel. In this paper, influences of rough surface upon the optical characteristics of the reflective type LCD are discussed. IntroductionFor increasing amount of available information by expanding computer networks, strong demands for mobile information tools such as portable computers and/or personal information tools have been increasing. A reflective t… Show more

“…The major technical challenge for a reflective display is on the specular reflections. Bumpy reflectors 15 and light control films 16 have been developed for separating the displayed images from specular reflections while steering the reflected ambient light to a designated viewing cone. As a result, the display brightness and contrast ratio are both enhanced.…”

“…Electronic paper is one of these long expected novel applications. Although not currently widespread, several display modes have been proposed [1][2][3][4] for electronic paper. One of the reasons for its delayed adoption is poor optical performance of the hardware.…”

“…Electronic paper is expected for long to be one of the novel applications. But it is not popularized sufficiently at this moment, though several display modes have been proposed [1][2][3][4] for electronic paper. One of the reasons is poor performance of hardware.…”

“…Reflective LCDs with single polarizer [2] known to be one of the conventional non-emitting displays, are also candidates for electronic paper. In topic of electronic paper, there seems to be tendency to exclude these from discussion.…”
