2-kV Thyristor Triggered in Impact-Ionization Wave Mode by a Solid-State Spiral Generator

Abstract: Impact-ionization wave triggering of a thyristor enables it to switch significantly higher currents with much faster rise times (dI/dt) than through conventional triggering; indeed tests on commercial components demonstrate that both current and dI/dt can be increased an order of magnitude over their specified datasheet values by utilizing impact ionization. However, creating an impact ionization wave places stringent requirements on the generator used to trigger the thyristorparticularly the trigger pulse mus… Show more

“…The spiral generator, used in the study from [18] to trigger thyristors in impactionization wave mode, features a compact design based on the spiral/vector inversion principle. It charges a spiral stripline to a high voltage that is rapidly discharged upon activation, reversing the electric field direction and effectively doubling the output voltage.…”

“…The generation of short high voltage pulses (tens to hundreds of kilovolts with a rise time ranging from nanoseconds to microseconds) is of considerable interest for a range of engineering applications including rock fracturing 1 , food sterilization without alteration of the nutrition 2 or as trigger generator for other devices, for example as input voltage of X-ray tubes 3 or to improve the switching performance of thyristors 4 . Several technologies are available to generate high voltage pulses, such as Marx generators [5][6][7] or Blumlein generators [8][9][10][11] .…”
