2014 CRL Build Study of Life Insurance Applicants

Abstract: Objective .- Determine the impact of build on insurance applicant mortality accounting for smoking, laboratory test values and blood pressure. Method .- The study consisted of 2,051,370 applicants tested at Clinical Reference Laboratory between 1993 and 2007 with build and cotinine measurements available whose body mass index (BMI) was between 15 and 47. Vital status was determined as of September, 2011 by the Social Security Death Master File. Excluded from the primary study were applicants with HbA1c values … Show more

“…We observed both in the younger and older twins that the higher the albumin levels, the lower the EAA, which is consistent with the literature on epigenetic aging (Uchehara et al, 2023) and aging in general (Lau et al, 2024), where lower albumin levels are associated with higher calendar age. The same has been observed for mortality risk among healthy adults at all ages (Fulks et al, 2010). We verified the negative association between albumin and EAA in within-pair analyses in all younger and older twin pairs, but no significant differences were observed within MZ twin pairs, and therefore genetic confounding could not be completely ruled out in these associations.…”

“…Albumin can offer protection from inflammatory processes and the associated damage to microcirculation and tissues ( Ferrer et al, 2018 ). Preexisting hypoalbuminemia is a prognostic indicator of worse outcome for a broad spectrum of diseases in both medical ( Fulks et al, 2010 ; Pavliša et al, 2017 ). There is a close correlation between the increase of CRP and the decrease of serum albumin levels.…”

“…In our study, 88% of patients had hypoalbuminemia at enrollment (< 3.5 g/dL). Low serum total protein (< 6 g/dL) has been associated with development of ARDS in patients with sepsis (23), and low levels of serum albumin are strongly associated with mortality across a wide array of cohorts (24)(25)(26). The association between hypoalbuminemia and ARDS is described in numerous instances in the literature (5,(8)(9)(10), and serum albumin is included as a variable in the Lung Injury Prediction Score (11).…”
