28‐3: Mini‐LED Backlight for HDR Compatible Mobile Displays

Abstract: Recently, ultra-thin and direct lit-type backlights with a 2dimensional local dimming function have become increasingly of interest because of increasing demands for HDR compatibleLCDs for mobile terminals. In this paper, we present a newly developed Mini-LED backlight that offers an effective solution to these demands.

“…For the impulse type driving, the backlight lighting timing is adjusted using the simulation system, and the lighting duty is adjusted so that its luminance is 400cd/m 2 (the FLAP and the Flashing Backlight Driving have the same duty). The 8-segment Scanning Backlight Driving is based on a mini-LED backlight system that has been developed [10]. During the Hold Driving in Fig.…”

“…We have developed various backlight systems capable of 2D dimming [9,10]. Among them, a backlight system with three light guide plates with LEDs on one bottom edge [9] can drive a scanning backlight with three segmented areas in the LC panel scanning direction.…”

“…In addition, LEDs as individual emitting devices, LEDs could be large‐scale assembled onto various substrates ranging from glass to rubber and plastic 8,9 . Generally, LEDs are used for backlight in common LCD modules, in which most of the light is absorbed by polarizers, liquid crystal layers, and color filter and only 5%–10% of the light emitted by LED backlight can be used, thus causing high power consumption 10–12 . However, the structure of self‐emitting display in LEDs facilitates the transparence of display without polarizer and color filter.…”

“…Another method is to tailor the angular distribution of the mini-LED backlight so that it can spread out more quickly in a shorter propagation distance. However, in this approach, sophisticated surface microstructures are usually needed [5,6].…”
