2D boron nitride nanoflakes as a multifunctional additive in gel polymer electrolytes for safe, long cycle life and high rate lithium metal batteries

Abstract: Highly dendrite-suppressing gel polymer electrolytes for lithium metal batteries are presented utilizing perfluoropolyether-functionalized 2D boron nitride nanoflakes as a multifunctional additive.

“…While ILE shows a free TFSI − anion intensity of only 76%, IL GPE displays 85% of Li + ‐uncoordinated anions due to the interaction between the anions and the fluorinated polymer chains. [ 28 ] 1.5BN GPE exhibits 92% of Li + ‐uncoordinated anions, demonstrating a larger content of dissociated Li + ions through immobilization of TFSI − anion by the functionalized BNNS addition. These trends are consistent with the obtained t Li+ values of the corresponding electrolytes (Figure 2b).…”

“…Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are an ideal alternative to liquid electrolytes;t hey usually react with lithium metal to form the unstables olide lectrolyte interphase (SEI). [3,4] Polymer electrolytes (PEs) with good mechanical strength can suppress the growth of dendrite structures and show excellent stability with lithiuma nodes. They are considered as an effective solution to the problems mentioned above.…”

“…A modified GO was also prepared to increase compatibility with polymer matrixes by Shim et al [170]. Recently, Shim et al [172] used a 3-4 nm-thick functionalized BN as an additive along with P(VDF-co-HFP) as a matrix to fabric an composite electrolyte (Fig. 8d) and found that even with small amounts of BN (0.5 wt%), the resulting composite electrolyte is still capable of providing unexpectedly high ionic conductivities (Fig.…”
