One of the most complex challenges of heritage sciences is the identification and protection of buried archaeological heritage in urban areas and the need to manage, maintain and inspect underground services. Archaeology and geophysics, used in an integrated way, provide an important contribution to open new perspectives in understanding both the history of cities and in helping the decision makers in planning and governing the urban development and management. The problems of identification and interpretation of geophysical features in urban subsoil make it necessary to develop ad hoc procedures to be implemented and validated in significant case studies. This paper deals with the results of an interdisciplinary project in Cusco (Peru), the capital of Inca Empire, where the georadar method was applied for the first time in the main square. The georadar method was successfully employed based on knowledge of the historical evolution of Cusco and the availability of archaeological records provided by some excavations nearby the study area. Starting from a model for the electromagnetic wave reflection from archaeological structures and pipes, georadar results were interpreted by means of comparative morphological analysis of high amplitude values observed from time slices with reflectors visualized in the radargrams.

This paper deals with the application of non-destructive geophysical techniques of investigation in the urban environment of the city of Nicosia (Cyprus). The main aim of the research was, in the frame of the Eleftheria Square redesign project, to image subsurface properties in order to reduce the impact of hazards on the old buildings (therefore preserving the cultural heritage of the place), and on the new infrastructure under construction. Since 2008, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), ground penetrating radar (GPR) and induced electromagnetic method (EMI) were employed during the different phases of the project to provide an understanding of geological stratigraphy, the detection of buried objects (archaeological structures and underground utilities) and the solution of unexpected events (such as water infiltration in the course of works). The geophysical results proved the efficiency of the adopted methods, adding scientific value to the knowledge of the studied area. The new gathered information helped the public administration technicians to plan direct and targeted interventions and to modify the original design of the project according to the discovery of archaeological findings.

The archaeological zone of Mitla has an invaluable place within the Mexican cultural heritage. This pre‐Hispanic city concentrated the political and religious power of the central valleys of Oaxaca, south of Mexico, mainly during the Postclassic period. However, despite its great cultural importance and considering the risk to its monuments due to the high seismicity of the region, very few studies have focused on the systematic exploration of the subsoil of this area. The present research aimed to characterize the subsoil of one of the architectural compounds of the archaeological zone, the Group of the Columns, aiming to identify possible underground elements such as architectural structures, tunnels or tombs. For that purpose, three non‐invasive geophysical methods were applied, ground penetrating radar (GPR), electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and ambient noise tomography (ANT). In the palace, all three methods showed the presence of a substructure below the Hall of the Columns. In the Plaza of the Columns, the GPR detected anthropogenic walls and platforms at different depths that suggest a different configuration of the square and a more prolonged occupation of this group. The results open the discussion about the temporality of the first construction of this architectural group.
