3–5 μm AgGaS2 optical parametric oscillator with prism cavity

Abstract: 1 Tunable mid-infrared laser sources operating at the transparency windows of 3-5 µ m in the atmosphere are more and more important for applications in laser remote sensing, laser target detecting, spectra analysis, atmospheric environment monitoring, space communication and applications in military. There are two effective methods to generate it: second harmonic generation (SHG) of CO 2 laser [1, 2] and optical parametric oscillator (OPO) [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. The former has the limited tuning range at t… Show more

“…Mid-IR OPO have advantages of producing long wavelength beyond 3 μm [13][14][15] and up to 8 μm [16] with broad tunable wavelength range ∼ 3 μm with prism cavity [14]. In comparison, a fiber laser promises higher pump and signal overlap leading to higher conversion efficiency, higher output beam quality, reduced thermal effects, complexity, space, maintenance requirements.…”

“…The 2 lm laser also serves as good sources for pumping nonlinear optical parametric oscillator (OPO) crystals such as ZnGeP 2 and AgGaS 2 so that the output extends to the mid-infrared spectral range [1][2][3][4][5]. As the 2 lm laser wavelength is at the absorption peak of water, it is very applicable for laser surgery.…”

“…When as the active medium the solid state laser has to be used then the laser generated wavelength was shifted by the nonlinear optics -optical parametric generation, mainly [4][5][6] . From the point of the application the wavelength in the midinfrared range is desired for remote sensing, trace gas analysis, pollution measurement, military countermeasures, and also considerably for biomedical diagnostics and medical treatment 7,8 and therefore the compact system is required.…”
