32.3: Novel Optical Compensation Method Based upon a Discotic Optical Compensation Film for Wide‐Viewing‐Angle LCDs

Abstract: A novel optical compensation method is proposed utilizing an optical compensation film made of a discotic compound. By precisely controlling the alignment structure of the discotic film, we have succeeded in obtaining excellent viewing angle characteristics. This idea of optical compensation is universal and applicable to any other LCD modes.

“…The DLC right next to the alignment layer has a high degree of randomness. However, the DLC in the vicinity of the alignment layer tends to align with the molecular plane parallel to the alignment layer surface with few degrees of pretilt angle in the alignment direction, while the DLC in the vicinity of the air surface tends to align with the molecular plane almost perpendicular to the air surface [72][73][74]. Therefore, the DLC exhibits a hybrid alignment structure.…”

“…The basic idea of phase compensation is to use an anisotropic optical film (or multiple films) to balance the extra or insufficient phase retardation caused by the LC layer and the light leakage of crossed polarizers at oblique angles. For example, the phase compensation films developed by Fuji Photo [12]- [14] and Samsung [15] are quite effective for TN and VA LCDs. There are also compensation films for blue phase [16] and IPS [17] LCDs.…”

“…These alignment structures of the PDM layer allow us to develop optical compensation films for any LCD modes. (simplified and idealized description) [4] The technologies mentioned above allowed us to develop the WV film that remarkably widened the viewing angle of the TN mode [5] . A simplified structure of the WV film is illustrated in Fig.…”
