3cixty: Building comprehensive knowledge bases for city exploration

Abstract: Planning a visit to Expo Milano 2015 or simply touring in Milan are activities that require a certain amount of a priori knowledge of the city. In this paper, we present the process of building such comprehensive knowledge bases that contain descriptions of events and activities, places and sights, transportation facilities as well as social activities, collected from numerous static, near-and real-time local and global data providers, including hyper local sources such as the Expo Milano 2015 official service… Show more

“…The paper [189] presents 3cixty, a framework to building a knowledge base that contains descriptions of events and activities, places and monuments, transportation facilities as well as social activities of a city. The development of an information service for tourists visiting the city for a big event, such as Expo, is discussed as an application, which leverages on the KM4City ontology and collects data from static, near-and real-time local and global data providers.…”

“…Except for 3cixty [19], which presents a tool for consulting a tourism and transport knowledge graph, the rest of the selected papers in this review use KBs for predictive purposes. Giannakopoulou et al [24], Olszewski and Turek [26] and Zavala et al [30] combine the KBs with data extracted from sensors and citizens, either from social media or by employing gamification techniques.…”

“…In this context, ontologies, understood as formal specifications of shared conceptualizations [11], can be used to provide such models in a reusable and extensible manner. Several smart city ontologies have been developed in order to represent data related to cities (e.g., [12][13][14][15][16]). However, these ontologies rely on very specific ontological commitments for their particular needs, which makes data interoperability harder to achieve.…”
