3D evaluation of the effect of disinfectants on dimensional accuracy and stability of two elastomeric impression materials

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine and compare the dimensional changes of polyether and vinyl polyether siloxane impression materials under immersion disinfection with two different disinfectants in three time periods. Impressions were obtained from an edentulous master model. Sodium hypochlorite (5.25%) and glutaraldehyde (2%) were used for disinfection and measurements were done 30 min later after making impression before disinfection, after required disinfection period (10 min), and after 24 h storage a… Show more

“…O silicone de adição apresenta uma boa estabilidade dimensional, porém demonstra uma natureza hidrofóbica, devendo ser utilizada em condição seca para menor alteração dimensional (Silva et al, 2016). Além disso, devido à alta estabilidade dimensional, as moldagens com este material podem ser vazadas mais de uma vez (Soganci et al, 2018). Essa característica permitiu a realização da técnica de troquelização, empregada neste estudo, por meio de duplo vazamento.…”

“…Further clinical studies need to be carried out to stimulate oral environment. [14] According to a study conducted by Godbole, the effect of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on dimensional stability of vinyl polysiloxane materials was not significant. Before and after disinfection with UV light, there was no difference in dimensional stability of impression.…”

“…1 Vinylpoly siloxane (VPS) material is considered the material of choice along with polyethers (PEs) due to its excellent elastic recovery, working, and setting times, tear resistance, and marginal accuracy. [2][3][4] However, VPS is hydrophobic and its ability to wet the prepared tooth surface for accurate impressions is compromised by the presence of moisture and saliva. 5 A further limitation of these impression materials is their poor compatibility with other dental materials, including dental acrylate resins, composite resin, retraction and hemostatic agents, and latex.…”
