Predicting forest recovery at landscape scales will aid forest restoration efforts.The first step in successful forest recovery is tree recruitment. Forecasts of tree recruit abundance, derived from the landscape-scale distribution of seed sources (i.e., adult trees), could assist efforts to identify sites with high potential for natural regeneration. However, previous work revealed wide variation in the effect of seed sources on seedling abundance, from positive to no effect. We quantified the relationship between adult tree seed sources and tree recruits and predicted where natural recruitment would occur in a fragmented, tropical, agricultural landscape.We integrated species-specific tree crown maps generated from hyperspectral imagery and property ownership data with field data on the spatial distribution of tree recruits from five species. We then developed hierarchical Bayesian models to predict landscape-scale recruit abundance. Our models revealed that speciesspecific maps of tree crowns improved recruit abundance predictions. Conspecific crown area had a much stronger impact on recruitment abundance (8.00% increase in recruit abundance when conspecific tree density increases from zero to one tree; 95% credible interval (CI): 0.80% to 11.57%) than heterospecific crown area (0.03% increase with the addition of a single heterospecific tree, 95% CI: À0.60% to 0.68%). Individual property ownership was also an important predictor of recruit abundance: The best performing model had varying effects of conspecific and heterospecific crown area on recruit abundance, depending on individual property ownership. We demonstrate how novel remote sensing approaches and cadastral data can be used to generate high-resolution and landscape-level maps of tree recruit abundance. Spatial models parameterized with field, cadastral, and remote sensing data are poised to assist decision support for forest landscape restoration.

Aeromagnetic and vertical electrical sounding around Ijano, southwestern Nigeria, was investigated for groundwater potential. Aeromagnetic dataset and vertical electrical sounding were acquired and used to investigate the study area. Oasis Montaj, Microsoft Excel and Arc GIS were used to present the results in maps, images and profiles. In order to map out the geological structures of the study area, magnetic image enhancing filters applied to the total magnetic intensity using Geosoft (Oasis Montaj) are reduction to equator, vertical derivative, total horizontal derivative and upward continuation. These filters helped define the lithological boundaries, geological structures, faults, folds and contacts. The lineament of aeromagnetic map was generated from derived field intensity gradients and solutions of Euler deconvolution carried out on the aeromagnetic data using structural index of 0.5 and 1. The processed image shows the lineaments trends majorly towards NE–SW directions. From these combined results of the study area, consistent aeromagnetic lineament map was generated showing the probable positions and trends of the suspected fractured/faulted zone as well as other basement structures. Hydro-lineament density maps based on lineament were produced from the generalized structure trends in the area. The result from the depth sounding data interpretation indicates three curve types which are H, HA and KH, where curve type H has the highest occurrence. The results from the vertical electrical sounding data revealed that the areas with the highest hydro-lineament density are good for groundwater prospect and development. The study has led to the delineation of areas where groundwater occurrences are most promising for sustainable supply, suggesting that an area with high concentrations of lineament density has a high tendency for groundwater prospecting. The results from the study show that the aeromagnetic technique is capable of extracting lineament trends in an inaccessible tropical forest.

The analyses of high-resolution aeromagnetic (HRAM) data of lower Benue Trough in southeastern Nigeria have delineated sections of the basin with requisite sedimentary thickness that could support the generation of oil and gas from right-type organic-matter rich source rock as well as identified intra-sedimentary structural framework that could aid hydrocarbon migration and restrain generated hydrocarbon within available reservoirs. The susceptibility and Analytic Signal (AS) maps derived from processed Gaussian-filtered and Reduced to Pole at Low Latitude (RTPLL) aeromagnetic data discriminate crystalline basement rocks from the sedimentary units. Likewise, many relatively shallow, short (900-1600 m) intra-geologic terrain linear structures and fewer long, deeper (>1.5-43 km) inter-geologic terrains crustal linear structures which reduce in population but increase in lateral extent and depth with increasing continuation distances were delineated from the processed Tilt Derivative (TDR) and the Horizontal components of the Tilt Derivatives grids at different Upward Continuation distances. Euler Deconvolution depth-weighting analyses determined depth to magnetic sources which ranges in value from 120 m above to 5 km below the Minna reference datum. Regions having sedimentary thickness in excess of 3 km with active intra-sedimentary structural elements qualify for further petroleum exploration campaign using other detailed geological and geophysical tools.
