4.0 Gbps visible light communication in a foggy environment based on a blue laser diode

Abstract: Fog has a strong attenuation effect on the optical channel, which will greatly degrade the performance of visible light communication (VLC). Studying the effect of the fog on communication performance is crucial to realize outdoor VLC for next generation networks, but there is little research on this topic. In this work, the transmission characteristics of visible light band in the foggy channel were measured and a high-speed VLC system based on a 450 nm blue laser diode (LD) and 16-ary quadrature amplitude mo… Show more

“…In this work, 16-QAM-OFDM modulation was utilized considering the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the proposed system, and the relevant parameters of OFDM signal are set as follows: the subcarrier number is 512 and the symbol length is 2048, and two 1/16 symbol lengths are set as the cyclic prefix (CP) and the pilot sequence, respectively. The OFDM schematic diagram and calculation method of data rate can refer to our previous work [16]. BERs versus data rate of the UWOC system with various parallel micro-LEDs were obtained as shown in Fig.…”

“…These optoelectronic devices are commonly applied in optical communication, such as fiber communication, and each has advantages and disadvantages. Using an LD as the transmitter can easily realize high-speed communication beyond Gbps [6], [7]. However, high cost and harsh operating conditions limit the development of the LD-VLC scheme.…”

“…Visible light communication (VLC) usually uses lightemitting diode (LED) and laser diodes [1][2][3][4][5][6][7] as light sources. Compared with laser diodes, LED have greater modulation bandwidth and higher response sensitivity.…”
