4-thioflavins as active site probes of flavoproteins: reaction with sulphite and formation of 4-hydroxy-4-sulphonylflavins

Abstract: For the sake of brevity we use throughout the terms 4-thioflavins and 2-thioflavins. The correct nomenclature is 4-deoxy-4-thio-and 2-deoxy-2-thioflavins. The same convention is used for other functional substituents, e.g. 4-deoxy-4-aminoflavins are referred to as 4aminoflavins.
