40 nm Tuneable Source for Colourless ONUs based on Dual Hybridly Integrated Polymer Waveguide Grating Lasers

Abstract: A dual-laser tuneable source based on a polymer integration platform is proposed as a low-cost light source for WDM-PON. A tunability of 40 nm along the C-band using a maximum electrical power of 82 mW was achieved. Direct modulation at 2.5 Gb/s through 20 km standard single-mode fibre and a 100 GHz-AWG has been successfully demonstrated

“…The active InP section has a length of 400 μm; refractive index n a = 3.4, and is supplied with a constant current. The passive section with a length of 1500 μm consists of a phase heating section which can be tuned by controlling the heating power P Ph and a Bragg grating which can be tuned by controlling the Bragg heating power P Br [13]. The Bragg grating has a penetration depth of 500 μm.…”

“…The Tx laser can be direct modulated on the GC at 10 Gb/s data rate [24,28,29]. The eye diagram after transmission along an 11.3-km-long standard single mode fiber (SSMF) is shown in Figure 12d.…”

“…To improve the performance, the tuning range of the LO can be expanded, e.g. by using a dual-grating structure and a Y-branch-based thermo-optic switch [29,33,36], to cover the full C-band. The MMI structure can be adjusted to shift the minimal loss band toward the center of the LO tuning range.…”

“…Further plans also include the development of a wavelength tunable transmitter for serial operation at 100 Gb/s through the polymer-based integration of an external cavity laser [34] with a high-speed MZM and an InP-DHBT driving circuit. Given its high throughput and flexibility, it is expected that this transmitter will provide a viable solution for the implementation of 100 GbE interfaces in the OCS domains of next generation DCNs.…”
