4d index to 3d index and 2d topological quantum field theory

Abstract: We compute the 4d superconformal index for N = 1, 2 gauge theories on S 1 × L(p, 1), where L(p, 1) is a lens space. We find that the 4d N = 1, 2 index on S 1 × L(p, 1) reduces to a 3d N = 2, 4 index on S 1 × S 2 in the large p limit, and to a 3d partition function on a squashed L(p, 1) when the size of the temporal S 1 shrinks to zero. As an application of our index, we study 4d N = 2 superconformal field theories arising from the 6d N = (2, 0) A 1 theory on a punctured Riemann surface Σ, and conjecture the ex… Show more

“…In the first part of the paper we derive a formula for the full localized partition function of a three-dimensional N = 2 U (N ) Chern-Simons-matter theory on such a Lens space. Several of the ingredients have already appeared in previous papers, including [5,6,7]. The partition function reduces to a matrix model integral, where the potential function depends non-trivially on p.…”

“…Using the path-integral representation of the index, one can relate the index to partition functions on other manifolds. For example, taking small thermal circle S 1 limit, the index calculation can be reduced to the calculation of partition function on S 3 [35][36] [37] (see also [38]). …”

“…It would be interesting to understand purely from gauge theory why the simplification coming from combining (3.25) with the results of [32] occurs in this limit. 14 An exhaustive classification of N = 2 boundary conditions and how S-duality acts on them is not the purpose of this paper and therefore we leave it for future work. Nevertheless we see that the relation with Liouville theory with boundaries might be helpful as a guiding principle.…”
