The use of historical maps in a digital environment can give considerable support to the study of the history of cities. It allows you to combine information from different sources, processed according to different geomatic techniques, to provide a reconstruction of urban configurations of the past and their comparison with iconographic and textual documentation of the same period. The aim of the research is to try to make the knowledge of a historical event easily accessible by converging within a simple model the various sources on which the reconstruction itself is based. This paper deals with the reconstruction of the ephemeral architecture created for Napoleon’s visit to Venice through the generation of 3D virtual models. The reconstruction was approached through a rigorous method, inserting these models into the context for which they were conceived. The generation of the historical city model, taking advantage of the algorithms of structure from motion applied to photogrammetry, made it possible to compare it with what was shown by the old paintings depicting the event. Virtual models processed within the GIS environment have been uploaded online thanks to the use of WebGIS. We chose to share the research results on the internet to allow users to avail themselves of a space that no longer exists from within it, going beyond the pictorial images of the past, overcoming communication through rendering and videos. The simultaneous application of methods and techniques related to the various components of geomatics within the digital environment has enabled the operation of a faithful reconstruction of reality, bringing to light past urban scenarios that no longer exist and are only known through paintings.

How can official survey data be prepared for virtual worlds? For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), these steps can still be very time-consuming. This article is vital for these companies, since its aim is to create a practical open source solution for everyday work based on up-to-date research. Developing integrated Virtual Reality applications for geographic information systems VRGIS today, we are facing following problems: georeferenced data are currently available in many different data formats. Often there is a lack of common standards, user-friendliness and possibilities for process automation, just as the correct georeferencing in virtual worlds is an open field. It is shown that open source platforms can offer very interesting, practical and economical solutions. Following the method of structured and focused comparison according to George and Bennett, fourteen current software solutions are presented as examples. The applications can be classified according to the taxonomy of Anthes et al., with regard to output devices and software development. A comprehensive networking matrix for applied interactive technologies will be introduced for SME partner searches in related software developments. The evaluation criteria of integration capability, operability without programming knowledge and cost-effectiveness allow for a subsequent discussion and evaluation. Finally, this paper presents a simple proprietary and open-source software solution for small and medium-sized enterprises. Map illustrations and methods for georeferencing are explained. Exemplary digital products and data formats are presented at the Landesamt für Digitalisierung, Breitband und Vermessung (LDBV) in Bavaria.

In rural and marginal landscapes, the architectural heritage carries an inestimable value. It distinguishes these places from the standardization of contemporary society and it makes them authentic and rooted in the territory. Investigating the real potential of building heritage and understanding what actions should be taken to raise it to the needs of contemporary society is one way to preserve this authenticity. The article presents an innovative multidisciplinary tool, based on GIS methodology, for rapid evaluation of the features of traditional rural architecture. With it, it is possible to carry out a complex analysis, by considering architectural, energy and structural items. It can also guide the design activities in order to optimize the revitalization actions, emphasizing the holistic approach. The potentiality of this procedure will be shown for a test site, namely, the Isle of Filicudi (Aeolian Islands, Sicily, Italy).
