66‐4: High Brightness Active Matrix Micro‐LEDs with LTPS TFT Backplane

Abstract: We report the active matrix micro-LEDs (AMLEDs) with high brightness over 40,000 cd/m 2 . Active-matrix low temperature poly-Si TFT with mobility over 150 cm 2 /Vs by using blue laser annealing is used for AMLEDs. A 256 pixels micro-LED with ~ 40,000 cd/m 2 at the driving current of 10 mA is fabricated and then 1,024 pixels micro-LED is demonstrated using Au bonding on the LTPS TFT backplane.

“…Recently, there were reports that LTPS-TFT backplane could be applied for the AM driving micro-LED displays [10,11]. In order to solve color shift of LEDs by the LTPS-TFT backplane, pulse-width-modulation (PWM) driving must be designed by using a plurality of TFTs in a pixel.…”

“…Here, the authors proposed a flexible micro‐LED array for in vivo optical recording of intrinsic signal (ORIS). The high spectral selectivity, brightness, and reliability of micro‐LEDs is making them an outstanding candidate for future high‐resolution active‐matrix displays, and this report successfully extended their applicability to the biomedical area. Especially, the direct spatiotemporal monitoring of brain requires individually addressable small pixels, and this can be well satisfied with micro‐LED devices.…”

“…Recently, Kim et al developed remarkably bright active-matrix μLEDs using the LTPS TFT backplane. 17 A solder bump material was employed for bonding the LTPS backplane to the μLED array. However, this process may cause pressure damage and stress within the μLEDs, which results in a fracture.…”
