6G to Take the Digital Divide by Storm: Key Technologies and Trends to Bridge the Gap

Abstract: The pandemic caused by COVID-19 has shed light on the urgency of bridging the digital divide to guarantee equity in the fruition of different services by all citizens. The inability to access the digital world may be due to a lack of network infrastructure, which we refer to as service-delivery divide, or to the physical conditions, handicaps, age, or digital illiteracy of the citizens, that is mentioned as service-fruition divide. In this paper, we discuss the way how future sixth-generation (6G) systems can … Show more

“…43 Moreover, the weight Thomas and Seely Brown place on online learning environments does not seem to recognise the digital divide and disparities in access to technology among different socioeconomic groups. 44 This highlights the need for careful consideration of instructional design, pedagogical approaches, participant numbers, and critical evaluations of online platforms. Optimistically, then, ORC/CD practitioners and researchers can play a crucial role in exploring the digital divide and devising solutions to bridge the gap.…”

“…Experimental analysis shows an improvement in average accuracy, which is ≈96.55%, in challenging UAV flying scenarios. Suraci et al [23] presented an applicative study on the 6G use cases to solve the diverse problem in different domains. Device-to-device communication with 6G and multi-access edge computing are presented to allow digital transformation.…”

“…Three major use cases are generally adopted in fifth generation (5G) cellular networks: enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), massive machine type communications (mMTC), and ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) [1]. In addition to these use cases, there is a global trend in the sixth generation (6G) to add a humanitarian aspect that consists of providing basic internet access for all, thus reducing the digital divide [1][2][3][4]. The main targets for basic internet access are remote rural and underprivileged areas.…”
