The aim of this research is to determine the comprehension level of advanced Arabic L2 speakers of English conditionals, types I, II, and III. An online test was used which consisted of a total of 60 questions. The test questions were divided into two sections: syntactic structure questions and inference of meaning questions. These were grouped into 20 questions for each conditional type. Thirty-five participants, 29 females and six males, were recruited. The findings demonstrated that the participants' comprehension level was not high. Furthermore, conditional type II was observed to be the most difficult type of conditional. The findings also revealed that participants performed better in inference of meaning questions than in syntactic structure questions. Investigating such conditional constructions offers us a deeper understanding of the relationship between form and meaning.

Media Arabic is a linguistically independent genre of Modern Standard Arabic. There are a number of explanatory reasons accounting for a characterized, integrally structured media Arabic form. Much within our scientific grasp is the overall combination of lexico-grammatical traits, constituting a major part of the internal textual ecology. Within our reach, again, there is parsimonious literature hardly informing, or predicting, what situationally and linguistically a media Arabic text is. The vast body of research is intuition-governed and prescriptive. This paper is a concise exposition of a work endeavoring to fill out such a gap in research. It summarizes the findings of a large-scale project in Arabic corpus linguistics that empirically investigates media Arabic genre from a functional lexico-grammatical perspective, by using Multi-Dimensional framework. The model uncovers the parameters of variation in media Arabic and explores underlying co-occurring functions. In documenting MSA textual similarities and differences among ten written media subgenres: Politics, Economics, Society, Sports, Science, Culture & Arts, Technology, Women, Health & Medicine, and Religion, Exploratory Factor Analysis was run and resolved within a six-factorial structure, the raw output to be subsequently interpreted as six-dimensional basis for the variable use of Arabic across the ten subgenres.

Arabic syntax has yet to be studied in detail from a corpus-based perspective. The Arabic copula kāna (‘be’), functions also as an auxiliary, creating periphrastic tense–aspect constructions; but the literature on these functions is far from exhaustive. To analyse kāna within the one-million word Corpus of Contemporary Arabic, part-of-speech tagging (using novel, targeted enhancements to a previously described program which improves the accessibility for linguistic analysis of the output of Habash et al.’s [2012] mada disambiguator for the Buckwalter Arabic morphological analyser) is applied to disambiguate copula and auxiliary at a high rate of accuracy. Concordances of both are extracted, and 10 percent samples (499 instances of copula kāna and 387 of auxiliary kāna) are analysed manually to identify surface-level grammatical patterns and meanings. This raw analysis is then systematised according to the more general patterns’ main parameters of variation; special descriptions are developed for specific, apparently fixed-form expressions (including two phraseologies which afford expression of verbal and adjectival modality). Overall, we uncover substantial new detail, not mentioned in existing grammars (e.g., the quantitative predominance of the past imperfect construction over other uses of auxiliary kāna). There exists notable potential for these corpus-based findings to inform and enhance not only grammatical descriptions but also pedagogy of Arabic as a first or second/foreign language.
