80.2: 60‐inch Highly Transparent See‐through Active Matrix Display without Polarizers

Abstract: For the first time, we have developed a 60-inch diagonal size seethrough display using polymer network liquid crystal (PNLC) technology. The color display system by combination of the seethrough display and a projector enables distinguishing eye-catch effect. It creates new application of displays, such as information display, digital signage and substitution of window.

“…The transparent display, which is considered to be a next-generation display, has received considerable attention in recent years [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Unlike normal displays, information is presented on a simple transparent glass plate -a feature that is useful in mobile phones, tablets, windows, head-mounted displays, and even buildings.…”

“…Large size and weight of the extra light source module and the conflict between color gamut and transmittance still present a challenge for practical use. Transflective or switchable scattering glass with a projector or side light source module for highly transmittance has also been proposed [3][4][5][6]; however, the extra light source module and image quality limit its range of applications.…”

“…Project technology, liquid crystal displays (LCD), electrowetting displays (EWD), projectors, organic light emitting diodes (OLED), and other technologies are typically adopted to create transparent displays [9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. In project technology, information is projected onto a transflective screen, and the user can combine this display information with the real image behind the screen.…”

“…Several switchable diffusers have been reported. One example is polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) [1,2]. PDLC is scattering in the absence of applied voltages and becomes transparent when a voltage is applied.…”
