Abstract:Abstract:We present for the first time a high performance APD-based linear burst-mode receiver (BM-RX) with a record wide dynamic range of 31dB. The APD multiplication factor is controlled from burst to burst within 60ns by an on-chip self-generated M-control signal. In the experiment, a total optical budget of 54dB is achieved with a single SOA-based reach extender for 10Gb/s upstream. With electronic dispersion compensation, the APD linear BM-RX with a wide dynamic range relaxes the requirement on optical co… Show more
“…Low-noise operation is critical to support the required optical budgets. A first such LBMRx was demonstrated in [11]; another example can be found in [12] featuring an avalanche photodiode (APD) to improve sensitivity. Note that when considering advanced modulation formats for the upstream, some of these (e.g.…”
We consider challenges associated with increasing bitrates >10Gb/s for next-generation access networks. We explain how burst-mode electronic dispersion compensation (BM-EDC) is attractive for the upstream, and show examples of the required linear burst-mode receiver.

“…Both blocks were designed and fabricated in a 0.13 μm SiGe BiCMOS process. The linear BM-TIA is based on the design in [14] but with a transimpedance gain adapted for the decoder IC and a fine-tuned bandwidth (one-fourth of the upstream data rate). The 1/4-rate small-signal bandwidth and linear operation are required for optimal three-level signal generation.…”

“…The optical power at the photodiode was estimated to be -3 dBm due to the grating coupler losses. A linear TIA [7] was integrated with the silicon receiver PIC using wire bonding and connected to an Anritsu signal analyzer used to demodulate the signal and determine the error vector magnitude (EVM). A linearity measurement of the entire link is shown in Fig.…”
