A 2-Question Summative Score Correlates with the Maslach Burnout Inventory

Abstract: Introduction: There is a high prevalence of burnout among emergency medicine (EM) residents. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) is a widely used tool to measure burnout. The objective of this study was to compare the MBI-HSS and a two-question tool to determine burnout in the EM resident population. Methods: Based on data from the 2017 National Emergency Medicine Resident Wellness Survey study, we determined the correlation between two single-item questions with their respective MBI … Show more

“…The MBI-2 is a 7-item Likert scale ranging from 0 to 6: from never (0) having the experience to experiencing it daily (6). A score of 3 or greater is a positive screen for burnout [ 20 , 21 ]. As there are 3 dimensions of burnout, an additional question to capture experience of personal accomplishment was added to this.…”

“…For the SI-MBI, burnout was defined when symptoms of either Qn8 or Qn10 occurred at a frequency of once a week or more often, i.e., item score ≥ 4 [15]. For the DI-MBI, burnout was defined by Qn8 + Qn10 scores > 3 [16]. For the aMBI, EE, DP, and PA, scores were derived by a method we previously described [17,19].…”

“…These were created by truncating the length of the MBI-HSS survey and fielding questions with high factor loading. MBI-derived screening tools include the single-item MBI measures of burnout (SI-MBI) [15], the dual-item MBI (DI-MBI) [16], and the twelve-item abbreviated MBI (aMBI) [17]. However, the legal implications of reproducing proprietary property or parts of it without permission and suboptimal tool design remain inherent issues with these tools.…”

“…17 This two-item score has been shown to correlate with the Maslach Burnout Inventory and used previously to characterize burnout among physicians. 13,18 Analysis Participant demographics and clinical characteristics were aggregated and described using frequencies. Individuals who noted a split in primary employment type (i.e., 50% clinical and 50% research) were classified as other.…”
