A 9-year longitudinal study on trajectories of aggressive and depressive symptoms in male and female children with overweight

Abstract: ObjectivesThe aim of this four waves 9-year longitudinal study was to examine aggressive/depressive symptoms trajectories in a sample of N = 90 children with overweight and a matched group of children with normal weight (subjects balanced by sex and sociodemographic characteristics). Weight and height were measured by pediatricians to calculate body mass index (BMI). “…[1,45]). Together with the findings that obesity and aggression share overlapping genes [46] and are co-morbid in epidemiological studies [47,48], indicate that obesity and aggression share common risk factors; plausibly GLP-1 signaling. Indeed, the potential role of GLP-1R for aggression is unknown.…”

“…This study provides the evidence of a gender difference for the association of BMI with SCQ. Overweight female children showed increasing levels of depressive symptoms 22 and depressed people usually avoid social situations 23 . According to our cross-sectional study, attention should also be paid to high BMI for girls with poor social function.…”

“…Other studies, conversely, addressed the effect of maternal depression over long periods of time but with a focus on children's early childhood and their adolescence, with little if any attention to the intermediate developmental stages (toddlerhood, childhood, latency, early adolescence). The present study, instead, made evaluations over a broad time frame, including the developmental phase around 8 years of age that has been demonstrated to be a critical point in determining future positive or negative outcomes in children's psychological well being, probably due to an increased capacity of emotion regulation and increased social skills [47][48][49].…”
