The ever-increasing demand for broader bandwidth per user, which results from the continuous development of new bandwidth-hungry services and applications, creates the motivation to upgrade the currently deployed Time-Division Multiplexing Passive Optical Networks (TDM-PONs) to NextGeneration Optical Access Networks (NG-OANs). Beside the need for more bandwidth per user, a further extension in the range and an increase in the split ratio are highly desirable in PONs. These additional requirements can be achieved by adopting so-called Long-Reach Optical Access Networks (LR-OANs). LR-OANs offer a promising solution that ensures a significant number of users can be supported over a longer range. Moreover, they introduce a cost-effective approach in which both the access and metro segments of the telecommunication network are combined into one backhaul segment, which results in the consolidation of many central offices into one trunk-exchange. This cost-effective approach gave us the motivation to provide a comprehensive survey on the LR-OANs. In this study, we first provide a brief review of different potential technologies, proposed for next-generation optical access. We then provide a review of different stat-of-the-art LR-OAN architectures including opportunities and challenges in each one. A comparison among them based on key network specification is also provided.

A remotely pumped Erbium-doped system for the amplification of an optical signal for long-reach (LR) next-generation passive optical networks (NG-PONs) is presented in this paper. The next-generation networks will be deployed with/over the current point to multi-point technology with/without backward compatibility. Remote pumping allows extending the reach of the optical distribution networks and the magnification of the splitting ratio as well, which is most important for increasing the number of end users in the PON network. In our laboratory, we have successfully verified the functionality of the unidirectional and bidirectional remote pumping system based on an Erbium-doped fiber inserted into the route and remote pumping from a central office. Our measurement results prove that it is possible to extend the total reaching point to the multi-point system without the difficult incidence in the optical distribution network. Based on the results, the proposed amplifying passive optical network approach is capable of being used in passive optical networks in C band for extending the total reach of system or increasing the split ratio.

To compensate the decrease in its revenue, most telecom operators have adopted similar strategy which is to provide faster Internet with low cost to its customers. Studies suggested that providing faster Internet with low cost can be achieved by reducing the cost of building next-generation access network. Among the various technologies introduced for next-generation access, long-reach optical access LROA is considered the largest candidate. This is due to the anticipated cost effectiveness of this technology. In LROA, more users can be supported over a common optical component (e.g., a transmitter, a fiber, or probably both), i.e., small number of entities is employed in the access network for service provisioning, which is considered as an improvement in the cost-sharing concept. Our objective in this paper is to verify the cost-effectiveness of this technology. To this end, a statistical-based cost comparison was conducted. The comparison was between the currently deployed passive optical networks (PONs), i.e., the Broad band PON (B-PON [G. 983]), the Ethernet PON (E-PON [IEEE802.3ah]), and the gigabit PON (G-PON [ITU-T G. 984]) and one of the LROA architectures proposed in the literature. The comparison process confirmed that the LROA requires less cost and cost per subscriber as compared with the currently deployed PONs.
