The efficiency with which conventional boilers perform, in terms of sustainability, is affected by a variety of factors. Unsustainable boiler operating practices are still surprisingly frequent in developing countries, resulting in environmental liabilities and catastrophic accidents. It is a serious problem in developing countries like Bangladesh, where boilers are utilized extensively in the apparel manufacturing sector. However, no research has yet examined the challenges or barriers associated with sustainable boiler operation in the apparel manufacturing sector. This study, thereby, utilizes an integrated MCDM approach, combining the fuzzy theory and the decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method, to identify, prioritize, and explore the relations among the barriers to sustainable boiler operation in the apparel manufacturing industry, from an emerging economy perspective. The barriers were initially identified from the literature and a visual survey of 127 factories. After expert validation, thirteen barriers were finally selected to be analyzed utilizing the fuzzy DEMATEL method. The study findings revealed that ’Absence of water treatment facilities’, ’Fossil fuel burning and GHG emissions’, and ’Excessive consumption of groundwater’ are the three most prominent barriers to sustainable boiler operation. The cause-effect relations among the barriers suggest that ’Inadequate compliance with safety and hazard regulations’ is the most influential and ’Fossil fuel burning and GHG emissions’ is the most influenced barrier. This study is expected to guide the managers and policymakers of the apparel manufacturing sector in successfully overcoming the barriers to sustainable boiler operation, thus mitigating the operational hazards and achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

This study focuses on Singapore's manufacturing-based SMEs. The framework utilised in this study, tested SMEs manufacturing technological items and their efficiency. Although numerous studies have been undertaken, further research is necessary to examine and identify the connected elements that affect the adoption of open innovation. The purpose of this study is to investigate organisational citizenship behaviours, integrative culture, managerial ties, transactional costs, and the significant role of appropriability regime in SMEs and the willingness to embrace Open Innovation. A positivist paradigm, using quantitative techniques, and a deductive research approach were undertaken for this study. The hypotheses incorporated organisational citizenship behaviour, integrative culture, managerial ties, transactional cost and appropriability regime and through statistical analyses, the research aims to quantify relationships. The primary data from SMEs was gathered via a survey. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to look at the questionnaire's Likert scale-emphasizing factor structure. Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling is then used to evaluate the analysis and internal consistency of the factors that were obtained (PLS-SEM). Involving SMEs in open innovation will increase the range of technical outputs and enable the development of sound, cutting-edge solutions with significant social impact. Among the advantages for society are the creation of higher-quality manufacturing and more environmentally friendly goods and services. Consequently, technological innovation is becoming a crucial component of the managerial education of tomorrow's leaders. It is possible to enhance learning capabilities and build a more constructive emphasis on managing innovation, which is necessary in the age of globalisation, by forging beneficial collaborations between diverse industries.

PurposeThe present paper examines the barriers hindering the implementation of circular economy practices in Indian automotive industries and identifies the most critical barriers to be eradicated during the circular economy implementation.Design/methodology/approachUsing a questionnaire survey-based analytic hierarchy process (AHP) approach, 21 barriers to circular economy implementation are identified through a literature review and ranked using the opinions of relevant industrial experts.FindingsBarriers, minimal or no proper economic incentives, difficulty in ensuring product quality and costing of CE products are identified as top barriers to be eliminated first to boost the chances of successful implementation of circular economy practices in Indian automotive industries.Practical implicationsThe study not only offers a roadmap on the order of elimination of barriers towards a circular economy but also provides insights from industrial experts on how these barriers can be eradicated and the ill effects of each barrier from an automotive industry perspective.Originality/valueThe authors develop a theoretical framework for barrier analysis for circular economy implementation in the Indian automotive sector using the classic AHP approach to identify the most critical barriers against successful implementation. Further, this study offers managerial implications on how these barriers can be eradicated in real.
