A bibliometric analysis assessing temporal changes in publication and authorship characteristics in The Knee from 1996 to 2016

Abstract: The findings indicate that there have been changes in publication and authorship characteristics in this sub-speciality orthopaedic journal during the past 20years. This provides encouraging indication of greater diversification and internationalisation of orthopaedic research.

“…Our study documents a gap in the proportion of female authorships within CNODES articles (36%) and the citing literature (29%) consistent with other STEMM literature showing a gender gap in productivity 26–28,31,53–56 . The increasing proportion of female authorships in many fields is often not proportional to the percentage increase of women in specific fields or academia, as a whole 31,54,57–60 .…”

“…Despite organizational commitments to increase gender equality, women remain underrepresented in many STEMM disciplines, particularly at senior positions, 1,[20][21][22][23][24][25] and may have lower productivity in some 19,[26][27][28][29] but not all STEMM disciplines. 7,30 In some studies, women have fewer single, first, or last author articles and fewer citations and tweets.…”

“…The female first- and last-authored journal article share increase in all 46 categories 1996–2018 confirms on a systematic level increases found in many previous studies of medical journals or specialisms [19,20,35-39]. The lower rate of increase for female last authors similarly provides a systematic confirmation of previous studies with a more limited scope [20,35,37,38], although two studies had partly conflicting findings [18,40].…”

“…The second approach is through the use of bibliometrics, which is an analytical and mapping method to quantitatively assess the linkages and impact of published articles and citations [ 7 ]. This is useful for gaining an overview of the status and trends in a journal [ 8 ], research field [ 9 ], country [ 10 ] or even globally [ 11 ]. It also enables the identification of influential authors [ 12 ] and publications [ 13 ] through the analysis of citation.…”
