A bicontinuous structure in some systems with cubic mesophases

Abstract: Abstract:A cubic structure of polymer colloid complexes is studied. The technique of the research includes i) an analysis of well-known literature SAXS data; on this basis, ii) constructing a simple model to estimate geometric structure parameters and to obtain a simulated scattering curve; and iii) comparing the model with the real structure obtained from the SAXS data, using the reconstruction of electron density distribution. A bicontinuous structure in cubic mesophases is formed.

A research methodology based on scaling concepts is developed in detail for nonequilibrium poly mer systems. Melt crystallized linear high density polyethylene is chosen as an example. In flexible chain semicrystalline polymers, the transition from a solid isotropic or oriented state to a melt or from a solid iso tropic state to an oriented state below the critical degree of polymerization occurs through necking at a non zero external field on the combined line of first and second order phase transitions. A melt is a symmetric phase with a zero order parameter. Lamellar and fibrillar semicrystalline phases are phases with inherent order parameters that are periodic functions of one coordinate, and the neck draw ratio is another order parameter. At the critical degree of polymerization, all the phases are identical. In terms of the fluctuation theory of phase transitions and critical phenomena, the quantitative dependence of macroscopic properties on nanostructure parameters in this polymer material is revealed. The neck draw ratio and the draw ratio at break are macroscopic properties. The structure is characterized by the average thickness of amorphous lay ers. The square of the neck draw ratio is equal to the product of the square of the draw ratio at break and the probability of collision of chain ends. In turn, this probability is proportional to the average thickness of amorphous layers in an isotropic sample. The problems of dynamic scaling and entanglements are discussed.

The main stages of the self assembling of supramolecular ensembles have been revealed by study ing different functional wedged macromolecules: polymethacrylates with tapered side chains based on gallic acid, their macromonomers, and salts of 2,3,4 and 3,4,5 tris(dodecyloxy)benzenesulphonic acid. The first stage is the formation of individual supramolecular aggregates (long cylinders or spherical micelles) due to the weak noncovalent interactions of mesogenic groups and the subsequent ordering in these aggregates, which is accompanied by a decrease in the free energy of the system. Supramolecular aggregates, in turn, form 2D or 3D lattices. The shape of supramolecular aggregates and its change with temperature are delicate func tions of the mesogen chemical structure; this circumstance makes it possible to rationally design complex self assembling systems with the ability to respond smartly to external stimuli. X ray diffraction analysis allows one to study the structure of supramolecular systems with different degrees of order, determine the type of mesophases formed by these systems, and reveal the phase behavior of the material. Particular attention has been paid to the method for reconstruction of electron density distribution from the relative reflection intensity. The application of a suite of experimental methods, including wide and small angle X ray diffrac tion, molecular modeling, differential scanning calorimetry, and polarization optical microscopy, allows one to establish the relationship between the shape of the structural unit (molecule or molecular aggregate), the nature of the interaction, and the phase behavior of the material.
