A bio-inspired optical system with a polymer membrane and integrated structure

Abstract: A bio-inspired optical imaging system with a polymer membrane and integrated structure is proposed. Similar to the human eye, the presented system has a biomimetic multilayered optical structure and utilizes a solid-liquid mixed tunable lens as the variable-focus unit. The focal length of the imaging system can be adjusted flexibly through the deformation of the tunable lens when it is compressed. A detailed description of the design principle, materials and fabrication process of the system is presented. The … Show more

“…Liquid selection is contingent upon its optical and mechanical properties, such that it has a high refraction index, low scattering, good material durability and thermal stability. This includes liquids such as water, [324] silicone oil, [325] glycerol, [326] polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), [327] and PDMS prepolymer. [312] The polymer membrane's elasticity and transparency is also of great importance, thus capsule material has been made of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), [325] PDMS, [324,327] and other silicone rubbers.…”

“…Biomimetics is the extraction of good design from nature. Having evolved from the human eye, the adaptive liquid lens has achieved adaptive focusing ability without any moving components [36,37]. Its working principle is functionally analogous to the accommodation process that takes place in the human eye [38,39].…”
