The Internet of Things is currently one of the fastest-growing branches in electronics. The development of energy storage systems and the miniaturization of dedicated printed circuit boards significantly influence that growth. However, the need for batteries and traditional printed circuit boards still limits devices' minimum size, weight, and cost, narrowing the application area. Energy harvesters and wireless power transfer systems fabricated with printed electronics can significantly reduce such devices' weight, size, and cost. Printed electronics technology provides scalable tools for many electronics applications, shortening the validation time and enabling new low-cost or disposable solutions on lightweight and flexible substrates embedded inside 3D printed structures and directly on device housings. Energy harvesting and wireless power transfer systems in electronic devices can provide enough power to minimize battery capacity and size or even eliminate the need for batteries in low-power applications. This review presents an adaptation of printed electronics technology in the fabrication of radio frequency energy harvesters and wireless power transfer rectennas for IoT applications. Last, perspectives for development towards greater integration with microsystems, transient electronics with ecofriendly materials, adaptation for next-generation telecommunication systems, and 3D structural electronics solutions are briefly discussed.

A textile, embroidered antenna, based on the fractal shape of the Sierpinski triangle, is designed in this paper for operation in the European free Industrial Scientific and Medical (ISM) 863–870 MHz band, as well as in the 902–928 MHz band designated for ISM applications in North and South America. Several prototypes have been fabricated by employing different stitch patterns and thread materials. The effect of the fabrication parameters on the performance of the proposed antenna is investigated through measurements and simulations, with the results being in good agreement. The antenna exhibits attractive characteristics such as wide bandwidth, relatively stable radiation patterns, as well as robustness in washing. Several tests reveal that convex and concave bent conditions do not affect the coverage of the aforementioned ISM bands, despite the shift of the resonant frequency in some cases. Moreover, the SAR values resulting from simulations are below the corresponding thresholds suggested by international guidelines.

Curved electronics, which are better coordinated and blended with the natural world due to the characteristics of large contact area, high space adaptability, etc., have been widely used in a quantity of areas ranging from conformal curved antennas and sensors in detection and measurement, to artificial smart skin of aerospace. Recent developments in curved electronics have made an increasing progress to the historic drawbacks of conventional planar electronics, however significant challenges still exist. Here, the main kinds of conformal fabrication technologies, including transfer printing, assembly techniques, curved lithography, conformal inkjet printing, 3D printing, and laser direct writing, are reviewed to realize manufacturing deformable/undeformable electronics on curved or arbitrary surfaces. The processes and features of each technology are comprehensively summarized together with their progress and potential values. Finally, the challenges and opportunities for fabricating conformal electronics on arbitrary surfaces are also discussed.
