A Brief Introduction to Integrated Pest Management for Aquatic Systems

Abstract: Aquatic invasive plants and animals are increasingly becoming a problem, causing severe economic and ecological damage to critical freshwater systems. The best strategy for controlling an invasive pest employs an integrated pest management (IPM) approach using a combination of biological, physical, chemical, and social/cultural control methods. Here, we examine the history and development of IPM and provide a discussion of the components of an IPM program involving development, evaluation, and management. Cont… Show more

“…This special issue includes articles by administrators, practitioners, and researchers who have studied and applied IPM in aquatic environments. Hubert et al (2021 # , this special section) discuss the history of IPM and use a premier example of IPM for Sea Lamprey Petromyzon marinus in the Laurentian Great Lakes. Hubert et al (2021 # ) discuss at length the policy framework that supports development of IPM programs across multiple scales.…”

Hubert et al (2021 # ) discuss at length the policy framework that supports development of IPM programs across multiple scales. Although it is outside the comfort zone of most readers of the North American Journal of Fisheries Management, the paper by Hoff et al (2021 # , this special section) provides a necessary foundation for practitioners as IPM in aquatic environments evolves.…”
