UN Convention on Climate Change 2015 mandates reducing carbon footprint to reduce global warming. Considering environmental concerns, Electric Vehicles (EVs) spearhead the move towards green mobility. Niti Aayog (Indian Government) has envisaged an “EV only” scenario by 2030. Two wheelers dominate the Indian automobile industry with almost 80% market share. With the transportation sector accounting for 70% of world’s fossil fuels use, the need for a sustainable supply chain which addresses environment, economy and societal issues, has, of late, aroused interest in the business academic community and industries. Sustainability in business decision-making promotes efficiency, controls expenditure, enhances customer delight, increases sales and market share, optimises risk management strategy, and promotes profitability. This study intends to develop a conceptual framework after examining research gaps in sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) and allied topics like sustainability, green supply chain management, and vendor partnerships through collaborative efforts. Even the UN vide Goal 9 of sustainable goals pertaining to industry, highlights the importance of this framework.

The rise of electric vehicles (EVs) is undoubtedly revolutionizing the automotive industry, and its impact on the car repair and service business is profound. While exciting opportunities emerge, the shift also presents significant challenges, potentially leading to the disappearance of certain jobs and parts. In this research, we explore the impact of electric cars on the future car repair and service landscape. By 2030, EVs will constitute 60% of global car sales, underscoring the significant shift towards electric mobility. This transition is expected to reduce maintenance costs by up to 40% compared to conventional vehicles due to the simpler design and fewer moving parts in EVs. Certain body parts, including radiators and exhaust systems specific to gasoline cars, will also become redundant as EVs become more prevalent in the market. However, amidst these disappearing parts, there are emerging opportunities in the automotive industry. The rise of EVs will necessitate new areas of expertise, such as battery diagnostics, charging infrastructure installation, and software updates, creating new job opportunities for trained technicians. Furthermore, there will be a growing focus on software and electronics as they play a bigger role in car functionality. This shift emphasizes the importance of upskilling existing technicians in these areas to capitalize on new avenues within the automotive sector, aligning with the evolving landscape of electric mobility.

PurposeThe document underscores the need for systematic smart mobility policies to advance smart cities, addressing resource waste and environmental issues. Recognizing challenges in adopting efficient smart mobility, the paper seeks to fill a literature gap by identifying governance-related best practices and success factors. The objective is to develop a clear framework for smart mobility adoption with policy implications, especially for Euro-Mediterranean (EuroMed) Smart Cities, reducing congestion and costs while promoting sustainability through data-driven decision-making and integration models.Design/methodology/approachTo conduct the study, we adopt a multiple-case approach, examining different smart mobility applications in three of the world's most relevant smart city contexts according to international rankings, namely New York, Copenhagen and Singapore. Starting with the framework emerging from the research sample, which is representative of three different continents and cultures, a comparative assessment is then made with two EuroMed Smart Cities, highlighting their relative gaps.FindingsThe paper presents an innovative framework for smart mobility that highlights five key success factors. In addition to highlighting related gaps with a sample of EuroMed Smart Cities, it offers guidelines and implications for administrators, policy makers and mobility managers.Originality/valueThis success framework is a powerful tool, framework and guideline with numerous theoretical and managerial implications. Indeed, it directs policymakers, policymakers and mobility managers toward creating innovative business models for sustainable smart mobility, maximizing the efficiency of the centralized urban system, reducing negative externalities, breaking down barriers and pursuing greater efficiency, resilience and equity in the accessibility, mobility and sustainable livability of smart cities.
