A smart city is a sustainable city that solves urban problems and improves citizens’ quality of life through the fourth industrial revolution technology and governance between stakeholders. With the advent of the fourth industrial revolution and the concept of smart cities changing, many smart city studies have been conducted. Still, studies on the overall flow of smart city research and major issues are insufficient. Therefore, this study analyzed the trends and characteristics of smart city research and proposes research directions through smart city literature analyses conducted over the past 10 years, from 2011 to 2020. This study conducted a systematic review of studies related to smart cities over the past 10 years. Smart city research was analyzed by dividing it into research methods and contents. In terms of research method, year, research methodology 1, research methodology 2, research purpose, data collection method, and use of research results were included in the analysis frame. In terms of research content, keywords related to research topics, analysis units, and the general classification criteria and security of smart cities were included. The research results mentioned in this study are expected to serve as useful guidelines for future smart city development projects.

This paper, through critical literature review, has investigated the application of smart transportation system in handling traffic congestion with the aim of enhancing traffic flow in overcrowded cities. It has been discovered that the movement of people to urban areas in search of infrastructures and livelihood has drastically increased the population of people in such areas. This has resulted in traffic congestion, and created mobility challenges as people move from one place to another to carry out their daily activities. Many people have tried a number of traffic congestion avoidance techniques in order to meet-up with their daily appointments, one of which is moving at odd hours such as very early in the morning or late at night. This is far from being a reliable solution to the problem of traffic congestion. This research therefore, proposes an IT-based solution for traffic congestion through the concept of smart transportation systems also known as Intelligent Transport System (ITS). Its usage has given rise to the proliferation of smart systems in different urban sectors and it is projected to cover more areas of human endeavour because of its ability to proffer solutions through its adoption.

IEEE 802.15.4 standard is widely used as a communication protocol by low-powered devices, including Internet of Medical Things–enabled technologies. These low-powered technologies have the ability to integrate several communicating and interacting devices for the purpose of wide range applications such as Smart homes and healthcare applications. However, the fixed superframe structure of IEEE 802.15.4 results in the unequal resource utilization among these low-powered heterogeneous Internet of Things devices. The low resource utilization degrades the network performance. In order to improve the network performance and optimum resource utilization, dynamic superframe approach is recommended. This article presents a content-based dynamic superframe adaptation algorithm for the low-powered Internet of Medical Things devices to address the resource utilization challenges. In the content-based dynamic superframe adaptation, the network coordinator dynamically adjusts the superframe along with the backoff exponent. It uses five Quality of Service metrics simultaneously: the application defined data traffic, receive ratio, Personal Area Network source nodes in numbers, number of collisions, and observed delay to achieve the optimal solution. A detailed analysis of the simulations shows that the content-based dynamic superframe adaptation is able to behave more intelligently to adjust superframe dynamic allocations according to the application’s content requirements. Moreover, it outperforms the other existing schemes in achieving the better resource utilization in IEEE 802.15.4 framework.
