A broadly sampled 3-loci plastid phylogeny of Atraphaxis (Polygoneae, Polygonoideae, Polygonaceae) reveals new taxa: I. Atraphaxis kamelinii spec. nov. from Mongolia

Abstract: Maximum Likelihood (ML) and Bayesian analyses (BI) applied for 3-plastid loci (cpDNA trnL(UAA) intron, trnL–trnF IGS, and rpl32–trnL(UAG) IGS regions) / 65 tips matrix resulted in preliminary phylogenetic reconstruction of the genus Atraphaxis. In combination with the morphological data the obtained phylogeny appears sufficient for recognition of challenging taxonomic entities. We found that a collection of Atraphaxis from the Dzungarian Gobi, which appears to be phylogenetically related to A. pungens, is morp… Show more

“…In addition, due to variation caused by mutation on the trnL-trnF intergenic spacer, Adrienne et al (2015) can identify a species in genus Lophophora. A new species of Atraphaxis is also determined based on the trnL-trnF intergenic spacer (Yurtseva et al, 2016).…”

“…The hypervariable non coding region, like the rps16 intron and the trnL-trnF intergenic spacer, is easier and preferred to be used for identification and discovery of a new species (Kress et al, 2009;Adrienne et al, 2015;Yurtseva et al, 2016). Therefore, this study reports the application of 2 DNA barcodes, i.e.…”

“…According to the results of an extensive revision of the genus Atraphaxis , several new taxa of the Polygonaceae family have emerged: Atraphaxis kamelinii species from Mongloia [146], Bactria genus with B. lazkovii species from Kygryzstan [147], and the Persepolium genus [148].…”

“…Modern phylogenetic methods, especially molecular approaches, have made it possible to identify many cryptic, unrecognized, or simply forgotten taxonomic entities (e.g., Mavrodiev et al 2012 a , b , c , 2013, 2014, 2015 a , Yurtseva et al 2016 a , b , among others), some of which are potentially in need of conservation attention. Such new analyses have also provided new information on the prevalence of previously unrecognized areas of endemism (Mavrodiev et al 2012 a , b ) as well as on the importance of environmental variables that may be fully congruent with the observed biodiversity (Mavrodiev et al 2015 b ).…”
