“…The unique structure of the mucin network imparts an extensional character to mucus, which is essential for proper function during physiological processes such as mucociliary clearance (Tabatabaei et al 2015), bolus formation (Burbidge & Le Révérend 2016), and swallowing (Burbidge & Le Révérend 2016). Experimentally, extensional flows are commonly established by stretching a sample between two vertically aligned plates.…”

“…Mechanistically, they suggest that, in addition to directly altering the pH of the sample, bicarbonate ions may interact with free or bound calcium to modify the structure and cross-linking of the mucin network and hence the spinnability of the sample (Vijay et al 2015). There is initial experimental and numerical evidence that CaBER measurements of sputum from patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may be sensitive enough to serve as biomarkers for stages of active infection (Tabatabaei et al 2015), and Zussman et al (2007) have proposed that the altered extensional rheological properties of saliva measured with CaBER between teenagers and the elderly may be related to the prevalence of different oral and dental conditions within each age group.…”

“…This was also underlined by Deneuville et al (1997); Lopez-Vidriero and Reid (1978). Although this distinction between mucus seemed no longer considered for several years, more recent studies have confirmed the interest of this observation, using stable/exacerbated distinction rather than visual criteria : Serisier et al (2009) and Tomaiuolo et al (2014) for CF sputum, and Tabatabaei et al (2015) for COPD.…”

“…Our prior studies with kinetic networks/branched molecular structures models such as Phan-Thien/Tanner and pom-pom have shown encouraging results in the areas of flows past objects, filament-stretching, mixing and separating flows and extrusion drawing (Tamaddon-Jahromi 2011a, b;Tabatabaei et al 2015;Echendu et al 2011;Al-Muslimawi et al 2013).…”
