A Cadaveric Study of Variations in the Origin of Lateral Circumflex Femoral Artery

Abstract: Introduction:The lateral circumflex femoral artery is a branch of the profunda femoris artery, which is the largest branch of femoral artery. The knowledge of origin and branching patterns of the lateral circumflex femoral artery is valuable for various surgeries and clinical procedures. Objectives:To determine mode of origin of lateral circumflex femoral artery and to determine the distance of origin of lateral circumflex femoral artery from the origin of profunda femoris artery and from mid-inguinal point.Ma… Show more

“…In general, the proximal perforator vessels have high chance to be septocutaneous perforator, whereas middle and distal parts of thigh perforator vessels were usually the musculocutaneous perforator. These findings on the distribution of ALT perforator vessels and type of cutaneous perforators are similar to those reported in previous studies [2,4,[8][9][10]. Among the 142 ALT flaps, there was one case of ALT flap with perforator vessels located at the distal part of the thigh (C).…”

“…Thus, the untoward aspects of the ALT flap are the complexity and variation of its vasculature that might complicate during flap harvest. Despite the variation of its origin, the dominant perforator vessels supply to the ALT was found abundantly in the center of the ALT [2,4,[8][9][10]. The simple ABC system is reliable in predicting the perforator vessel location during harvesting and dissecting the flap.…”

“…MCFA shows high incidence of origin from FA as shown by many studies, the percentage ranging from as low as 3.3% to 39.3% [10]. The MCFA might also arise from LCFA or from the Superficial femoral artery (SFA) after giving off the PFA [11,12]. When the artery arises from the FA its origin is at higher level than when it arises from PFA/LCFA or SFA.…”
