A Calibrated, Watershed-Specific SCS-CN Method: Application to Wangjiaqiao Watershed in the Three Gorges Area, China

Abstract: The Soil Conservation Service curve number (SCS-CN) method is one of the most popular methods used to compute runoff amount due to its few input parameters. However, recent studies challenged the inconsistent runoff results obtained by the method which set the initial abstraction ratio λ as 0.20. This paper developed a watershed-specific SCS-CN calibration method using non-parametric inferential statistics with rainfall-runoff data pairs. The proposed method first analyzed the data and generated confidence int… Show more

“…As the rainfall depth, the direct runoff, and the initial abstraction are known (measured or estimated), Equation (3) may be solved for the maximum potential catchment retention: S. Finally, the initial abstraction ratio was computed from Equation (4) for each recorded storm event. This technique of Ia estimation has been used in previous studies such as Shi et al [8] and Ling et al [49].…”

“…This paper used a dataset which has less than 2000 samples, and therefore, the Shapiro-Wilk test was used. If the p-value is greater than 0.05, then the dataset is considered to be normally distributed [33]. Based on the normality tests (Table 4), FFB and ONI data distribution were determined to be non-normally distributed, and FFBI data distribution was normally distributed.…”

“…Direct runoff is defined and may be relevant in the calibration of other parameters such as the initial abstractions relation (Ia = φS, being I a the initial abstraction, S the maximum potential retention, and φ a fraction of S). Although φ is often set equal to 0.2 (USDA NRCS 2004), several authors suggest that it varies from location to location (Ling et al 2019) and that such value may not be adequate for certain regions (Portela et al 2000) as it tends to overestimate the initial rainfall losses or abstractions. This suggests that the calibration of that parameter can be of relevance when applying CN based models.…”
