A Case of Accessory Tragus on the Nasal Vestibule

Abstract: We present a case of accessory tragus (AT) which developed at an unusual site, the nasal vestibule, of a 1-day-old girl. To our knowledge, this is the first report of an accessory tragus that appears on the nasal vestibule. (Ann Dermatol 22(1) 61

“…Accessory auricles are more common in male patients and are unilateral in 90% of cases (10). This anomaly most frequently occurs on the face, but it can be found on other locations such as the lateral side of the neck (11,12), suprasternal region (13), middle ear (14), Eustachian tube (15), nasopharynx (16,17,18), oropharynx (19) and nasal vestibule (20).…”

“…AT is a more precise term as it develops from first branchial arch, whereas tragus is the only part of external ear which develops from branchial first arch. The AT is a relatively common benign congenital anomaly7 that was reported by Birkett for the first time in 1858 8. The exact prevalence of AT as an isolated physical finding is unknown but it has been estimated to be 1.7:10009 and is the most common form of all external ear abnormalities 10…”

“…AT is associated with Delleman syndrome, Goldenhar syndrome,8 Haberland syndrome and Townes-Brock syndrome 12. In Goldenhar syndrome (oculoauriculovertebral dysplasia), the occurrence of AT is a constant finding which is an autosomal recessive condition.…”

“…Shin et al . presented a rare case report in which accessory tragus was present on the nasal vestibule . If the accessory tragus lesion is large enough, it could resemble polyotia, a congenital external ear defect presenting as an extra auricle .…”

“…Accessory tragus is a developmental defect involving malformation of this part of the external ear . It is a moderately rare congenital condition that was reported in 1858 by Birkett for the first time . The approximate prevalence of accessory tragus is 1.7 : 1000 and 9 : 10,000–10 : 10,000 for unilateral and bilateral lesions, respectively .…”
