A case of Lassa fever: clinical and virological findings.

Abstract: Five days after arriving in London from Jos a young Nigerian woman developed a severe and prolonged illness that proved to be Lassa fever. Virus was not detected in urine during the first three weeks but then appeared and reached a peak during the sixth week, with continuing excretion for 67 days after the onset of illness.

“…The antibody titres of both one-dose and two-dose sera were 1/2048, as estimated by indirect immunofluorescence on acetone-fixed Lassa-infected Vero cells. Human serum was obtained from a Lassa fever patient 68 days after the onset of symptoms (Emond et at., 1982). It had an immunofluorescence titre of 1/16000.…”

“…3 and 4). Taken together, these data, in regard to NHP convalescence and virus detection, may not be novel, given that infectious LASV has been observed months after convalescence in the urine of humans who have recovered from the illness 13 . It is possible that the timing of the 8.9F/12.1F/37.2D combination treatment of the +3 cohort led to a cell-associated state for the virus that did not lead to detectable release of virus.…”

“…It is estimated that between 15-20% of all hospitalized Lassa fever patients are likely to die from the illness if appropriate medical intervention is not instituted early [3,10] On the other hand, epidemiological and immunological studies have shown that immunity developing in those who survived Lassa virus infection is long lasting [20,21].…”

“…Lassa virus is characterized by high genetic variability hence there was initial difficulty regarding the design of primers for Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) in molecular studies of the virus. Consequently, some Lassa virus strains were believed to escape, detection by PCR during the early studies [15,21]. Other members of the Old World African Arenaviruses that share similar properties and closely related to Lassa virus include Ippy virus, Mobala and Mopeia (Table 2) [7,13,31,32].…”
