A Case of Localized Malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma Evaluated by 18F-FDG PET/CT

Abstract: Localized malignant mesothelioma is rare. The prognosis is generally more favorable for this condition than for diffuse malignant mesothelioma. An elderly woman recently complained of abdominal pain, fever, and weight loss. She had no history of asbestos exposure. Her serum CEA level was elevated. Plain CT revealed a mass under the left diaphragm, with liquefaction and necrosis. A contrast-enhanced scan showed circular enhancement of the mass. A subsequent biopsy of the mass revealed a poorly differentiated ca… Show more

“…This study confirms that LMPeM in women is indeed a rare tumor as the 18 cases presented herein were collected in a large tertiary oncologic center over a 43-year period. This is in concordance with the English literature where 43 of such cases have been reported in a span of 26 years (1995 to 2021) 1–22,28,29. The mean and median ages were slightly higher than that reported in the literature (57 and 55 y, respectively, vs. 53.7 and 54 y, respectively) 1–22,28,29.…”

This study presents for the first time the ethnic distribution of women affected by LMPeM who were mostly Caucasians (80%), followed by African Americans (13%) and Hispanics (7%).…”

“…5 In pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma, 18 F-FDG PET/CT is a metabolic imaging modality used for staging, restaging, and treatment response assessment. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12] This case presents the rarity of primary mesothelioma of the liver. Furthermore, we highlight the value of 18 F-FDG PET/CT in diagnosing and staging primary hepatic mesothelioma by ruling out a possible malignant primary tumor from elsewhere in the body and detecting lymph node metastases.…”
