Introduction:A frequent childhood condition called protein-energy malnutrition is largely brought on by a lack of energy, protein, and micronutrients. This study is designed to measure effective of the self-learning module for the knowledge of nurses concerning protein energy malnutrition for children in Mosul teaching hospitals Methodology: Pre-experimental pretest with a posttest of one-group study design was applied at Ibn Al-Atheer Teaching Hospital inside Mosul City from 1 st of June 2021 to 2 ed of January 2022. The sample was chosen using a not-randomly purposive sample that contains (60) nurses.A preliminary study was conducted on selected (10) nurses for 2 days, the period from 18-17 March 2021. The program booklet and questionnaire were created and made available to nurses. This is divided into two parts. The initial part deals with socio-demographic data, while the second component is broken up into six parts, each including five multiple-choice questions. A panel of 11 professionals from various areas evaluated the program booklet and questionnaire to determine its validity. The pilot research was conducted to assess the questionnaire's dependability. During the period from 1 st to 4 August 2021. It included (10) nurses that non-probability selected. Using the Cronbach's Alpha test, the result (0. 791) using SPSS version 25. Results:The study sample was female gender that 66.7% (40) of the sample at age (23-25). The total nurses' knowledge was 56.7% (34) at a failure level in the pre-test but 43.3% (26) of the post-test at good level. The results of both tests showed a significant difference; the mean was (1.833), the standard deviation (0.905), the t-test (-15.690), and the p-value (0.000) were all significant. Age and gender were the only socio-demographic factors with which total knowledge in the pre-test the post-test significantly differed, but no other socio-demographic factors were significantly different. At p<0.05 value. Recommendations: Another study regarding protein energy malnutrition should be done for the nursing staff by other researchers.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) may develop as a rare complication following COVID-19. MIS-C presentation varies substantially, but fever and gastrointestinal symptoms are the most prominent. Indeed, gastrointestinal involvement may be severe enough to present as acute abdomen, posing challenges to clinicians. We present herein the case of a healthy five-year-old male who presented with fever, vomiting, and abdominal pain, resembling acute abdomen. The patient had no history of SARS-CoV-2 infection or exposure, and MIS-C diagnosis was initially surpassed unnoticed. The patient underwent exploratory laparotomy that only revealed mesenteric lymphadenitis. Postoperatively, the patient met the clinical and laboratory diagnostic criteria of MIS-C. SARS-CoV-2 exposure was serologically confirmed and MIS-C treatment was commenced, resulting in defervescence and a satisfactory outcome. In young patients presenting with acute abdomen, surgeons should be aware of MIS-C, so that earlier diagnosis and appropriate treatment are made prior to surgical interventions.

Background. On December 2019, a novel coronavirus disease (COVID‐19) spread worldwide and became a pandemic. Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS‐C) due to cytokine release syndrome following COVID‐19 presents with various manifestations. We hypothesize that one of the rare manifestations is acute abdomen. Case Presentation. In this case series, eight cases (five girls and three boys) of gastrointestinal (GI) involvement and acute abdomen were reported to be associated with the cytokine storm due to COVID‐19 infection. All patients were of Iranian nationality (Caucasian ethnicity), with a mean age of 8.9 years (range 3.5–14). They all presented with fever and acute abdominal pain. Additionally, maculopapular rash and edema of the extremities were common presentations. Free fluid on abdominal ultrasound or computerized tomography (CT) scan was observed in all patients. All cases tested positive for COVID‐19. In six cases, laparotomy or abdominal surgery was performed for a diagnosis of acute abdomen, but appendicitis was confirmed in only one case. None of the cases presented with phlegmon. Elevated serum lipase and amylase levels were noted in two cases. Seven patients received corticosteroid pulse therapy. Clinical symptoms improved after one or two doses, and all patients were discharged after 4 weeks of follow‐up with no mortality or morbidity. Conclusion. Patients experiencing unexplained acute abdominal pain along with fever, skin rash, and peripheral edema, who had a history of COVID‐19 infection prior to or during the episode of acute abdomen symptoms, should be considered to have MIS‐C. Furthermore, methylprednisolone pulse therapy could be a safe treatment option, reducing hospitalization duration in this patient population.
