A case of penile fracture with complete urethral disruption during sexual intercourse: a case report

Abstract: Penile fracture is a rare condition. Primarily it is a rupture of the corpus cavernosum that occurs when the penis is erect. The rupture can also affect the corpus spongiosum and the urethra. We report a case of a 37 year old man who presented with acute penile pain, penile swelling and the inability to pass urine after a blunt trauma during sexual intercourse. In emergency surgery we found bilateral partial rupture of the corpus cavernosum with complete urethral and corpus spongiosum disruption. In the one yea… Show more

“…The combination of fracture penis and urethral rupture is rare and poses a problem of management and may worsen immediate and long-term prognosis. Reports on such group of patients are lacking and most of them are case studies [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. Also, the long-term outcome of such patients is under-reported.…”

“…Tri‐tubular penile fracture with complete urethral and bilateral corpora rupture is a rare urological condition. So far only 61 cases have been reported in the literature over the last two decades, which have all occurred due to the erect penis sustaining high‐energy trauma during vaginal or anal sexual activity 1–8 . Notably, bilateral corpus injury is inevitably associated with urethral injury 8 .…”

“…All repairs should be leak tested with artificial erection by engorging the corpora. Indwelling catheter has been placed in all cases of penile fracture with urethral injury, which were left for a variable duration of 7 to 21 days 1,3–7,10 . There is currently no consensus on the use of medications to suppress erections 6 …”
